One of the things that I wanted when I started getting into birds is one that talked. Please note that, one that talked. We got Mr. P:
when he was 13 weeks old. We spoke to him a lot. In what seemed like no time, but was most likely 6-8 months, he started talking. His very first words were "God Damn It" which he picked up from the neighbor. Since then he has just become a little chatter box. He probably has a vocabulary of a couple hundred words though he doesn't use them all the time. And he is constantly picking up new words. It's very cool.
We liked Mr.P so much we got Ricky:
(the blue one). He was just weaned when we got him so he was only about 8-10 weeks. After a few months he started talking too. Cool. He was picking up everything Mr. P said. Nice.
Then a friend wanted to re-home her bird and we ended up with Tweety:
When we got Tweety he was about 8 and we've had him for 1 year, so he's about 9 right now. He came with his own vocabulary. He meowed like a cat and said "Where's your little friend?" Well, Mr. P and Ricky both picked up what he said and he's picking up what they say. So they sit around and talk back and forth all the time and it's quite cute to listen to. They also like to play in water. They like bathing and just splashing around it seems. I bet they would love pond fountains but I can't put one in the room here.
About 6 months ago we got Sherlock:
(he's the green one near the top with the dark stripes on his face). He was about 8 months old at the time so now he's a little over a year. He is a mustached parakeet and they are not known to be great talkers, but he does mumble a lot and I'm hoping with all the talking that goes on he'll pick it up.
Finally, the most recent addition to the flock is Monty:
We initially took him on a temporary basis. His owners were trying to sell their condo - which did not allow pets - and they needed to get him out for the showings etc. So I agree to take him while they sold their unit and figured their lives out. I just heard the other day that I can keep Monty. They are in a position where they really can't take him, plus they have probably figured out how much time and effort he took up, so they asked me if I wanted him. I said yes because he is a cool bird and very unique :) So I'm sitting here just now and I hear him talking. He has a very small voice and it's kind of garbled so it's hard to understand. But I just heard him very clearly say, "step up", "come here", and "hi, monty" which is something Mr. P says. So apparently a couple of months around this group and he's talking up a storm too.
So, what began as a desire for 1 talking bird has turned into a roomful of birds that talk most of the time. Luckily I like to listen to them :P
