Fencing

Yesterday we went and looked at fencing.  We live in the middle of 3 houses and the houses on both sides are getting dogs.  We currently have 3' chain link fence which is not going to cut it.  So we went looking at fencing.  Vinyl, which I would love, is going to cost about $5,000 - ummm.....maybe later.  More chain link will require tearing out the old and sinking new posts and everything.  Time consuming and I hate chain link.  So it looks like wood is the winner.  Most wood fences are made of redwood because bugs don't like redwood, but redwood is expensive.  It would be about $9 a slat.  Which would end up costing us around $1,000 - yikes.  Of course the neighbors on either side would split the cost of the side fences but we are still looking at around $600 for us.  Yikes!!!  Also, redwood comes in 5' or 6' lengths - a little higher then we wanted to go.  Then we found some pine.  4' pine slats are $4 a piece.  That cuts the cost of the fencing down to around $500 and our share would only be about $350.  That is much more reasonable.  I know that the pine will have to be treated and it won't last as long as the redwood but for now I think it's the best buy.We can always change the slats out with redwood over time or replace the whole thing with a vinyl fence in a few years.  We'll see.  What I do know is that right now we need to get some fencing up and pine looks like the winner.
