They've been in the same room. They've even seen each other. But they've never been close. Yesterday was the day. We moved Ricci into his temporary cage (temporary in that we are hoping him and Mr. P will eventually share a cage). We put the cage right next to Mr. P's cage because I want them to get used to each other and learn to love each other. But since Ricci has no balance or skills of any kind, I left him inside his cage and let Mr. P climb around the outside. This was the initial meeting:
This is the first time I've gotten Mr. P talking on tape. He usually clams up when I pull the Flip out. How does he know what it is?? But yesterday he was much more fascinated with Ricci and could not care less about what I was doing. His voice is so cute!!!
Anyway, I quickly realized this was a bad idea. Ricci tried to bite Mr. P's toes. No biggie he's just a baby. But then Mr. P tried to bite Ricci's toes. Ummmm.....NO!!! Mr. P also managed to grab Ricci's beak and wouldn't let go. There is a little nick in Ricci's beak. His beak is hard but not as hard as it will be when he's done growing. Finally, Mr. P figured out how to open Ricci's cage. Okay, that's enough!!! I ended up putting Ricci across the room so he and Mr. P can see each other but there is no contact unless I allow it. We will keep it that way for a couple of weeks, until Ricci is fully grown and eating on his own and a little more confident on his feet. Once he is full size and able to move around easily I will let him and Mr. P play together in the bird house. Hopefully they will really, really like each other and want to share a cage. That's the plan anyway.
