Meanwhile, in the rest of the world

So yesterday I caught you up on the dogs. I should have mentioned Clouseau also. He is still around and kicking. Getting old, I estimate he is probably around 40ish years old by now. But still hanging in there.

Now, to the humans. Last time I wrote was 2019. Shortly after that we sold the house we were in and moved to our last house in Tempe. It has a big yard and a pool and a spa and is completely awesome. The dogs love it because there is room to roam in the yard, not that concrete patch that we had at the other house. So that's all good. Still some work to do on the house, but we are not in a rush as we are going to be here a while.

Then, in early 2020, we had only been in our house for 7 months, Covid hit and the world shut down. Literally a world wide pandemic that affected millions and millions of people. Lots of people died from it and it was brutal. I had it in November of 2020 and was really sick for 2 weeks and then it took me another 3 weeks to really recover from it. Then the husband had it in January of 2021 and was in the hospital for 7 days and out of work for 8 weeks. It was bad. We are still, 2 years later, dealing with it. New strains have come up and they travel the world in waves. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. And it really showed the lack of common sense and the sense of entitlement some people have. But I'm not getting into that. This pandemic has really brought out the worst in some humans.

We were home for basically a  year and the animals loved it. Mavy and I walked a lot. I taught from home and it was kind of awesome. It made me consider getting a remote teaching job, but I also discovered that we all get really lazy when we are home all the time. So we are both back to work at the school and the dogs have adjusted to that again.

So there you have it, almost 3 years in 2 short blog posts. I am going to alternate blogs every morning, so I will be posting here a couple of times a week. I want to track Mavericks training and all the health issues of the dogs.

That's it for today.

Time to get back to it

So it's been about 3ish years since I've written in here. The last post was about whether to keep this domain or not. Well, I did keep it - obviously - and now I've decided to use it again. So before we go any further, time to catch up with the animals.

Lola - still kicking. She is now almost 14 years old and showing it. She is full of arthritis and walks funny. She has lumps all over her little body from fat deposits. She is almost completely deaf and seems to be suffering from a little doggy dementia.  But she is still hanging in there and getting goofy now and then.

Bella - is now 11 1/2 years old and still around. She developed Cushing's Disease and was diagnosed about a year ago. She now takes medication for that and seems to be doing okay. She has a lot of arthritis and her rear end is getting weak making it hard for her to get up and down, but again she is hanging in there and doing pretty well. In December we finally had the tumor removed from her lower jaw. The had to take off a couple of mm of jaw so now she has a little overbite that is so cute. She adjusted fairly quickly and is going great. She is still happy and joyful, just like she's always been. She gets excited when we come home and is still her bouncy self.

Maverick - doing well. He is going to be 6 this year and is a chubby little dog. We had been doing agility for almost a year but his heart was not really in it and it was expensive, so we stopped. Last night, after a 2 year hiatus, we returned to training. This time it's just some obedience stuff. Something to keep his mind and body active. He gets neurotic if he doesn't have something to do. Otherwise he is doing well. He does have a limp in his back leg on and off. I wrote about it in 2018 and it still comes and goes. He has also gained some weight and that could be part of the problem. Hopefully by being back in training he will drop a couple of pounds.

Okay, that's really all I have time for today. Tomorrow I will catch up on the human lives and what's been happening with us.

What to do?

I pay for this domain but I don't really use it. It's only $10 a year, but I don't want to pay it anymore if I'm not going to make use of it. So I need to decide what to do with it. I could keep it and use it as it was intended - to keep track of the animal adventures in the house. Maybe, instead of trying to keep up with everyday things, I should just use this as a weekly journal. Hmmm....I do like having a record of things that happen with the animals, so maybe if I schedule a weekly update that would be good. I need to think about this. I just renewed the domain, so I have another year to figure out what to do with it.

Revelations on training

Mom here for this post. I need to document some things that have happened with the training of Maverick and Bella is still sleeping.

Maverick is a smart dog. I knew that after just a day or two. He is extremely intelligent and a very quick learner. We started training classes 3 weeks ago and Maverick has mastered everything I've asked of him and more. But what I want to talk about is me, not Maverick.

I've heard for years that dog training is really to train the owners, not the dog. And while I understood that and could even see it in other people, I apparently never applied it to me. I have trained all my dogs to do things, but apparently, I was doing things without really considering it. Let me explain.

In the past, when I 'train' a dog to do something, I expect them to get it. I expect them to learn it after a few times and to perfect it after some practice. Now the amount of time and practice depended on the dog and the action. And my patience was directly related to that perceived time frame in my mind. Some dogs catch on immediately and don't need a lot of reinforcing. Others take a long time to catch on. And some are stubborn, have a mind of their own, don't understand the why, etc. And logically I get that. But after doing the same thing for days or weeks and the dog still is not perfect at it, I would get frustrated and angry, the dog would get confused and things would regress and generally I'd give up. Luckily most of my dogs have been pretty smart and they learned things in spite of me.

Then along came Bella. Bella kind of changed my way of thinking and training. She was such a sweet, gentle dog that only wanted to please her humans. I could never get mad at her. And I started training her by shaping without even realizing it. I wanted her to look at me when I called her name, so everytime she looked at me I would say her name. To this day, if I say 'Bella' she looks right into my eyes. There were other things I did too, that at the time didn't occur that I was using the shaping method. But it worked with her because she was so sweet and gentle and wanted to make us happy.
I tried to use this method on Axl, but he was so over the top reactive it didn't work. Then I would get frustrated, he would get scared, and things would deteriorate quickly. I feel really bad now and hope he knows that I was trying my best with him.

Fast forward to Maverick. Maverick has some little issues, barks at some other dogs, pulls on the leash, etc. Nothing super serious. Also, his barking is generally not aggression but excitement. But Maverick is also super, super smart. I don't think I've ever had a dog this smart. But let me continue. So we started training with him 3 weeks ago. Since we got him, we've done the simple things; sit, down, wait, things like that. But as usual, I started trying to make him be perfect and that was not working. The training we are doing is very positive based and I think that helped me see what I was doing wrong. In the past, in my mind, there was always a separation between 'training' and 'not training'. Some walks were specifically for training, while other walks were just for fun. The other day I realized that the dog does not know the difference. To the dog, every walk is just a walk. Sometimes I let him get away with crazy stuff and sometimes I don't. That must be seriously confusing to the dog. So I started taking treats with me on every walk and working on things every walk. It has made a huge, huge difference. I reward when he is walking and doing things I want him to do. When he is not, no rewards. And Maverick is learning that if he walks nicely beside me, he gets treats, but if he pulls he gets nothing. It's freaking working. I'm remaining a lot calmer through the whole process because I'm not expecting him to be perfect, I'm just watching for when he's doing things right and rewarding them. OMG!!! I feel like I'm a little slow in this whole process. On dog #8 I figure this out. UGH!!!!

Another thing that I struggled with is the whole treat thing. They say to treat like crazy when they are learning and then gradually reduce the treats and eventually remove them. For some reason, I thought this was a quick process. I thought okay, I'll treat today but then tomorrow start removing them. I realize now that's ridiculous. You treat until the action is almost automatic. Until the dog almost has no other choice but to do that action when he hears that word. That may take days or weeks or months, but it will come. I realize now that I was very impatient and wanted things to be done NOW!! I also did not want to put in the level of work required to reach a state of training like I wanted. Now that is really ridiculous. How can I expect to have a dog that does X Y Z if I don't train them to do X Y Z? So yeah, I think I have finally figured it out. Now I just need to remember this and continue to apply it as we go. Because I know there will be hiccups in the road and I know that it will take calm, confident work on my part to get him through it. Luckily I have a super smart dog.

So yesterday at training, Maverick was throwing things at me to get treats. He would do things when I hadn't asked for them and then expect a treat for them. It was interesting to watch. He would sit and wait for a treat. When nothing came, he would climb on the platform and sit, expecting a treat. It was really funny to watch. He wanted a treat and he was going to do whatever it took to get one. Such a smart freaking dog. ......

Where have we been?

Things have been busy around here. Mom and Dad are finishing up the school year and the weekends have been busy, busy, busy. I'll try to catch you up.

Maverick started training classes for just basics; sit, stay, walk on a loose leash, etc; and Mom says he's doing really, really good. She works with him every time we take a walk which is morning and night. He gets hot dogs and string cheese and Lola and I try to steal some. It doesn't always work.

Maverick has also been tearing up Mom's office area. Mom had to put wire fencing around it so he can't get in when they are not home. He tore up some books and lots of papers and stuff. We are only alone for about 3 hours a day, so I don't understand why he gets so crazy. I miss Mom and Dad too, but I found that if I sleep the time goes by much faster. Mom says he will grow out of this and Dad says he better soon.

Other than that, life is the same. Mom and Dad say 2 more weeks and school will be over. Then they will be home all the time. I love summer. They are around all the time and we do lots of fun things.

I guess that's it. Maverick starts agility training in 2 weeks so we shall see how he does at that.

Mom is mad

Maverick is limping again. The last 2 days have been kind of busy for Mom and Dad. They worked on Thursday, which is normal, but Dad had a golf game after school, so no walk Thursday night. Then yesterday they had a bunch of errands to run, so we only got about 30 minutes at the dog park and Maverick was walking during that time. Mom and Dad had to go out last night and didn't get home until late. When they got home, both Maverick and Lola were limping. Lola's went away pretty quickly, but Maverick is still limping and Mom is mad. She doesn't know what he did, but she is pissed. We had just gotten him over his last limping spell. And he's supposed to start training today. Mom is not sure how that is going to go.

Lola and I went to the vet yesterday. I'm in great shape and I've lost 5 pounds - woo hoo!!!  Lola, on the other hand, is not doing so great. Mom has been saying she's not herself lately, Lola not Mom, but she can't put her finger on exactly what is wrong. Lola's energy level and stamina are way down and she gained some weight. Also, Lola has a lump under her neck that came up pretty quickly so that is a concern too. The doc took a sample of the lump to test and suggested a test for thyroid, so Mom is doing that too. We will know next week what is going on with Lola.

Maverick Update

So last Wednesday Maverick was limping when Mom got home from work. Mom and Dad made sure Maverick rested a lot and by Saturday it seemed to be getting better. On Saturday Mom and Dad had some friends over and Mave got a little wild and by the end of the day, he was limping pretty good. On Sunday Mom was really worried because he was not using the leg at all. She was trying to find a vet that was open on Sunday and Easter, but she had no luck. They kept him quiet all day and hoped for the best. On our Monday morning walk, I knocked Maverick over and he screamed like crazy. Mom was so worried and afraid he was really injured. So Monday she contacted our vet to try and get Maverick in. They couldn't see him so Mom started calling around to different vets. She finally found Dr. Watson who could see him right away. So after school, Mom came home and threw Maverick in the car and ran off to the vet. It was his knee that was hurting and the vet thinks it's his ACL. He has been put on Rimadyl for 10 days to try and reduce inflammation and help it heal. If it doesn't get better, he needs further examination and possibly surgery. Mom is so bummed. The good news is, that he responded favorably to the Rimadyl almost immediately. They gave him a shot in the office and sent Mom home with a prescription to start the next day. By later that night he was using the leg and trying to run around like a crazy man. By the next day, he was using the leg all the time and he was running and playing and getting really crazy. So Mom is very hopeful that this will fix it and surgery won't be required. Mom keeps saying that if it was torn he would still favor it a little, and he's not favoring it at all. So here's hoping Maverick is on the mend.

It's been a rather quiet week with Maverick down. We walk in the mornings but by afternoon it is too hot to walk. Summer is definitely coming.
