So you think you want a parrot?

Once I got into birds I realized the problems with them. People really don't understand what they are getting into when they take on a bird as a pet. I know I didn't completely understand and I had been around bird people for years. This is a great news story on parrots. These owners really show what it's like to own a parrot and the things that are involved. It also shows the problems that can occur when things don't go as planned. If you own a bird you will understand. If you are thinking about getting a bird, watch carefully.

The lady with the Lorikeet actually made me feel a lot better. She said that everyday she thinks she just can't do it anymore. I get those thoughts once in a while and then feel horrible for it. Now at least I know I'm not alone.

Great reminder for people. I saw a show on PBS years ago that really stuck with me. Owning a parrot was likened to having a perpetual 2 year old child. Now that would take a really really special person!

Don't worry, you are not alone in feeling that it is too hard at times. Parrots aren't meant for confined life, no bird is, so the pressure of trying to compete with a forest is trying.

And there have been several good PBS shows you can look up for more clips. There was one in particular on Scientific American Frontiers, featuring Dr. Pepperburg and Alex and Foster Parrots Ltd. (I think) that was particularly good at showing how much work they are.
